The milestone for Violet, 18, is a “huge deal for the whole family”
Ben Affleck is busy helping his daughter Violet prepare for college.
The actor marked his 52nd birthday on Aug. 15 and has been under heightened public scrutiny over the state of his marriage with Jennifer Lopez.
However, Affleck “has been very focused on getting Violet ready for move-in,” a source tells PEOPLE.
The 18-year-old, eldest of the three kids he shares with ex-wife Jennifer Garner, is starting classes soon at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.
“It’s, of course, a huge deal for the whole family, and they’ve all been so excited the last few weeks,” the source adds.
For his birthday last week, Affleck received visits from both Garner, 52, and Lopez, 55, at his rental home in Brentwood, Calif. Affleck and Garner, who divorced in 2018, also share Seraphina, 15, and Samuel, 12, and Lopez is mom to 16-year-old twins Max and Emme, with ex-husband Marc Anthony.
A source previously told PEOPLE Affleck’s “small birthday celebration at home” with his kids was “exactly what he wanted.” Added the source, “He didn’t want to go out to celebrate. The kids had gifts for him, and it was cute.”
Though Affleck and Lopez have spent the majority of the summer apart on different coasts — including their two-year wedding anniversary and Lopez’s birthday in July — they put on a united front to celebrate Violet’s high school graduation in late May, where the couple held hands.
The pair have still not publicly commented on speculation about troubles in their marriage.
Lopez, who canceled her summer concert tour to spend more time with family, has enjoyed outings in recent months with Violet. A source recently said the singer-actress “wants to spend quality time with [their kids] before school resumes and Violet is off to college.”
“Just because she’s not with Ben, doesn’t mean that she doesn’t care about his kids. She always cared about them,” that source added.
