Olivia Munn has revealed that she was once offered a substantial financial settlement
—exceeding $1 million—to remain quiet about a distressing experience she endured while working on a film.
The actress opened up about the ordeal during a conversation on Monica Lewinsky’s Reclaiming podcast,
where she reflected on how her tumultuous upbringing shaped her values and influenced her response to the situation.
A Childhood Marked by Challenges
Munn explained that she faced relentless bullying as a child, an experience that molded her into a person who fiercely values justice.
She admitted that these formative experiences made her see the world in a very black-and-white way,
often leading her to make firm decisions without overanalyzing the possible consequences.
“So things were really black and white for me, and I would make decisions without thinking them through enough,” she said. “I just was like, ‘This is wrong, this is right,’ and I would never really be able to see the gray.”
This deep-rooted sense of justice carried into her adult life and career, influencing how she handled a troubling situation she encountered on a film set.
A Disturbing Experience on Set
Without naming the project or detailing the specific incident, Munn shared that she experienced something deeply unsettling while working on a movie. The situation was so severe that she felt compelled to file formal complaints with the studio.
“There were other things that happened on this movie set personally to me that were really not OK, and it was so traumatic that I had to file complaints with the studio,” Munn revealed.
While she refrained from providing explicit details, she alluded to the fact that numerous warning signs and concerning behavior occurred during the production.
A Multi-Million-Dollar Offer—With Strings Attached
Munn then revealed that after she came forward with her concerns, she was presented with a significant financial offer to settle the matter. However, the payout—reportedly in the seven-figure range—came with a catch: she would have to sign a nondisclosure agreement (NDA).
“But it got to this place where I was offered a lot of money,” she shared. “A lot of money—seven figures—to accept, I guess, their apology and them taking acknowledgment of it.”
Although Munn insisted that she had no intention of publicly speaking out about the incident at the time, she still felt uneasy about the NDA requirement.
“Not that I would ever have talked about it, truly, because I just wanted to move past it all,” she said. “But I said, ‘I’m not signing an NDA,’ and they said, ‘You have to.’ And I just felt that it was so wrong.”
Standing Her Ground Amid the #MeToo Movement
The X-Men: Apocalypse actress noted that the situation was particularly troubling because it occurred during the rise of the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements, a period when Hollywood was being forced to reckon with systemic issues of misconduct and abuse.
“This was, like, the reckoning—the Harvey Weinstein reckoning that began it all,” Munn explained. “This was that time period, and this was when people were targeting anyone who signed an NDA saying, ‘Oh, you only did it for the money.’”
Because of this, she feared that signing an NDA would undermine her credibility and give the studio leverage to diminish her voice.
“I was concerned that the movie studio would leak out that I had signed an NDA for money in an effort to diminish my voice,” she said.
A Firm Decision to Walk Away
Despite the pressure, Munn ultimately refused to accept the money or sign the NDA. She described a pivotal moment when she firmly rejected the offer, despite her lawyer’s advice to consider it carefully.
“I turned to my lawyer and I said, ‘I’m not taking it,’” she recalled. “I told my lawyer, ‘I’m just not gonna do it. I want to say no now.’ And he was like, ‘Let’s think about it.’ And I said, ‘I want to say no now!’”
A Reflection on Hollywood’s Culture
Munn’s story sheds light on the challenges many actors face when confronted with difficult situations in the entertainment industry. While she didn’t disclose specific details about the incident, her decision to refuse a large settlement in favor of maintaining her integrity reflects the ongoing struggle for accountability in Hollywood.
As the industry continues to evolve in the wake of #MeToo, Munn’s story serves as a reminder of the difficult choices individuals must make when standing up against powerful institutions. Though she chose not to name the project or those involved, her experience highlights the broader issue of workplace misconduct and the pressure many face to stay silent.
For Munn, the choice was clear—justice and personal integrity outweighed any financial compensation.
