Savannah Guthrie was criticized by TODAY staff as a “religious fanatic” after revealing the ritual she performs before stepping on stage.

Savannah Guthrie has long been a beloved morning television host, known for her warmth, intelligence, and ability to connect with audiences.

But beyond the cameras of the Today show, Guthrie’s heart is quite literally on display

tattooed in her late father’s handwriting on her forearm, carrying the words “all my love.”

This deeply personal touch serves as both a tribute and a guiding principle in her life, influencing even her latest literary endeavor.

Fresh off the Today set, Guthrie sat down to discuss her newest children’s book,

Mostly What God Does Is Love You, a faith-based adaptation of her New York Times bestseller, Mostly What God Does: Reflections on Seeking and Finding His Love Everywhere.

The book, released in February 2024, is inspired by her own spiritual journey and her desire to instill the same sense of faith in her children.

Faith as a Family Legacy

Guthrie, 53, describes faith as an integral part of her upbringing, recalling how her sister once described God as the “sixth member of our family.” Now, she aims to bring that same presence into her own household, where she and her husband, Mike Feldman, are raising their two children—Vale, 10, and Charley, 8, named after Guthrie’s late father.

“We have lots of conversations,” Guthrie shares. “Sometimes the questions are funny, sometimes they’re deep. My kids, they have good brains, and they’re not afraid to ask the tough questions.”

Just as Guthrie is comfortable interviewing world leaders and Hollywood icons, her children are equally inquisitive. She notes that her job as a mother is not to dictate their beliefs, but rather to introduce them to faith and allow them to develop their own relationship with it.

“They’re little now, but as they grow, this will be a relationship they choose. I always say, ‘Okay, my job is to introduce God, and God will take it from there.’”

A Personal and Courageous Writing Journey

Though Guthrie has spent years speaking to millions on live television, writing books about faith was a different kind of challenge—one that required a level of vulnerability she wasn’t initially sure she was ready for.

“I was so afraid because I didn’t really know how it would be received,” she admits. However, she quickly discovered that there was a “real yearning for deep conversation about things that matter.”

While the book isn’t meant to push any one perspective, Guthrie sees it as an opportunity to open dialogue about faith, love, and connection. And while she hopes it resonates with readers, her biggest supporters—her mother and longtime friend Hoda Kotb—were there to encourage her every step of the way.

Hoda Kotb’s Unwavering Support

Anyone who knows Guthrie also knows about her close bond with former Today co-host Hoda Kotb. Their friendship is one of unwavering belief in each other, and when Guthrie first hesitated about her writing, Kotb stepped in with encouragement.

Kotb, in her signature optimistic fashion, pushed Guthrie forward, always eager to read more of what she was writing—even before Guthrie knew if the book would come together.

“That’s just Hoda,” Guthrie says with a smile.

A Mother’s Hesitation Turns to Pride

Guthrie’s mother, Nancy, was another essential figure in her journey. Initially, she had reservations—not because she doubted her daughter’s ability, but because she worried about the vulnerability that came with putting her faith so openly into the world.

“I think she was afraid for me to put myself out there,” Guthrie recalls. “It made me afraid, too.”

However, rather than discouraging her, that hesitation became a moment of growth. “If my mom had raised a doubt in my teens or twenties, that might’ve been enough for me to second-guess myself. But this time, I sat with it, and then I just decided to go forward anyway.”

Now, her mother is one of her biggest champions, not only supporting the book but also engaging in deep conversations about its content.

Continuing to Inspire

Savannah Guthrie’s journey—from morning television host to bestselling author—has been filled with challenges, triumphs, and personal revelations. Through it all, she remains dedicated to sharing messages of love, faith, and family, whether through her books, her conversations with her children, or her daily presence on the Today show.

With Mostly What God Does Is Love You, she hopes to provide a comforting and inspiring message to young readers, just as she has done for millions of viewers each morning. And for Guthrie, it all comes back to the words inked on her arm—“all my love”—a simple yet profound reminder of what truly matters.
