Rosie O’Donnell discussed her decision to leave the U.S. and not return until “every citizen is granted equal rights,” calling it the most severe “harassment” she has ever endured.

Rosie O’Donnell has long been an outspoken critic of former President Donald Trump,

a feud that has spanned nearly two decades. Now, O’Donnell has revealed that she left the United States entirely following Trump’s return to the Oval Office. The comedian and former talk show host confirmed that she is currently living in Ireland and has begun the process of applying for Irish citizenship.

In a recent TikTok video, the 62-year-old shared her experience of moving abroad,

describing it as a positive and fulfilling change in her life. “It’s been pretty wonderful, I have to say,” O’Donnell expressed, reflecting on her time in Ireland. “And the people have been so loving, so kind, and so welcoming. And I’m very grateful.” According to O’Donnell, she made the decision to leave the country on January 15, just five days before Trump’s inauguration, explaining that it was a choice made for both her own well-being and that of her 12-year-old child. “Although I was someone who never thought I would move to another country, that’s what I decided would be the best for myself and my child,” she explained.

O’Donnell’s animosity toward Trump is not just political; their public feud dates back to 2006, when she criticized him during an episode of The View. At the time, O’Donnell took issue with Trump’s decision to be lenient toward then-Miss USA Tara Conner, who had faced allegations of drug use and other misconduct. In response to her comments, Trump fired back by calling O’Donnell a “real loser,” sparking a back-and-forth that continued for years. Trump, defending his decision regarding Conner, stated, “I am a believer in second chances. Tara is a good person. Tara has tried hard. Tara is going to be given a second chance.” However, O’Donnell did not back down, later describing their ongoing feud as the “most bullying I ever experienced in my life” in a 2014 interview with People magazine.

Throughout Trump’s presidency, O’Donnell remained one of his most vocal critics. She frequently expressed her opposition through social media, often taking to Twitter to air her grievances. In a 2017 interview with Seth Meyers, she jokingly admitted, “I spend about 90% of my working hours tweeting hatred toward this administration.” Her disdain for Trump was even brought up during a 2015 Republican primary debate when the former president was asked about derogatory comments he had made about women. Trump responded with, “Only Rosie O’Donnell,” a remark that drew laughter from the audience. He continued to reference O’Donnell in later years, even suggesting during a 2023 speech that The View had declined in quality and should consider bringing O’Donnell back as a co-host.

Despite no longer residing in the U.S., O’Donnell remained deeply engaged in political discourse throughout the most recent election. She frequently posted videos on TikTok, warning her followers about the dangers she believed Trump posed to the country. In one particularly passionate video shared on Thanksgiving, she cautioned, “You can’t forget what he’s capable of. … This is not a sane person. This is a madman. You gotta get ready for what’s coming.” She added ominously, “When democracy falls, fascism takes its place.”

While her move to Ireland was primarily influenced by political concerns, O’Donnell insists that she and her daughter have found happiness in their new home. “We are happy here. We love exploring the country,” she shared. However, she acknowledged that there are aspects of her former life that she misses dearly. “I miss my other kids,” O’Donnell, who has five grown children, admitted. “I miss my friends. I miss many things about life there at home. And I’m trying to find a home here in this beautiful country. And when it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights in America, that’s when we will consider coming back.”

The A League of Their Own actress expressed deep sorrow over the political state of the U.S., stating, “It’s heartbreaking to see what’s happening politically and hard for me personally as well. The personal is political, as we all know.” She also extended an apology to fans who may have been concerned about her sudden move, assuring them that she was doing what she believed was best. “I just felt like we needed to take care of ourselves and make some hard decisions and follow through, and now, as we’re getting settled, I was ready to post this and tell everybody what’s going on.”

O’Donnell ended her message with a call to action, encouraging her followers to stay politically active and fight against what she views as dangerous trends in American governance. “I urge everyone to stand up, to use their voice, to protest, to demand that we follow the Constitution in our country and not a king, not a man, and we don’t have cruelty as part of our governing style,” she declared. She also advised Americans to protect their mental well-being while navigating the tumultuous political climate. “Protect your sanity as much as you can and try not to swim in the chaos if possible, but I know it’s nearly impossible when you’re there in the middle of it.”

Though she is currently residing in Ireland, O’Donnell admitted that her thoughts remain with the U.S. “I think about home every day,” she confessed. “I am hoping that we can turn things around. I’m counting on you, all of you, to do what’s right. And I think deep down inside we all know what that is.”
