Robin Roberts of GMA breaks down as she accuses network executives of being TYRANTS: “They exploit my work in the worst way…”

Robin Roberts became visibly emotional on a recent episode of Good Morning America

as she reflected on a deeply personal milestone—her return to the show after a life-saving stem cell transplant.

The beloved anchor, who co-hosts GMA alongside George Stephanopoulos and Michael Strahan, opened up about the journey

that brought her back to the show 12 years ago, admitting that looking back on it is “still very hard.”

Robin Roberts’ Health Battle and Courageous Recovery

In 2012, Roberts was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a rare and serious blood disorder that affects bone marrow.

The diagnosis meant she needed a bone marrow transplant to survive, and fortunately, her sister, Sally-Ann Roberts, was a perfect match.

Roberts was absent from GMA for 174 days while she underwent treatment and recovery. On February 20, 2013, she made her highly anticipated return to the anchor desk, a moment that was celebrated not just by her colleagues, but by millions of viewers who had followed her journey.

Over the years, Roberts has become a vocal advocate for bone marrow donation, using her platform to raise awareness about the need for donors. Through her efforts and GMA’s ongoing support of the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), formerly known as Be the Match, she has helped inspire thousands to register as donors and make a difference in the lives of those in need.

A Heartfelt Tribute on Good Morning America

On the recent episode of GMA, George Stephanopoulos introduced a segment marking 12 years since Roberts’ return after her transplant. The tribute included archival footage of her first day back on the show, along with a look at the incredible impact she has made through her advocacy.

Viewers saw clips of donors who have registered through NMDP thanks to Roberts’ story, including her own nephew, Jeremiah Craft, as well as students and staff from her alma mater, Southeastern Louisiana University, who have taken part in donor drives.

An Emotional Moment in the Studio

Following the segment, Roberts and her fellow anchors, including Strahan, Lara Spencer, and Sam Champion, shared their thoughts on the significance of the day. Champion noted how fortunate they were to be able to celebrate together, saying:

“We have the luxury of sitting here together as a family looking back because of that procedure. When we think about going through our lives every day, we don’t even think about it. Robin, I don’t know if you even think about it every day. But looking back at it, it seems like yesterday.”

Roberts then admitted that she couldn’t bring herself to watch much of the old footage, explaining that the experience was still deeply emotional for her.

“I’m very grateful, don’t get me wrong, but it’s difficult. I love being a walking, breathing symbol for folks that this too shall pass.”

Her words resonated with both her co-hosts and the audience, highlighting the profound impact her journey has had on so many lives.

The Impact of Robin Roberts’ Advocacy

Since Roberts first shared her story, the impact has been remarkable. Sam Champion revealed that, as a result of her advocacy:

155 people have donated bone marrow

More than 37,000 individuals have registered as potential donors

Over $2 million has been raised in financial contributions

These numbers serve as a testament to Roberts’ dedication to raising awareness and helping those in need.

A Surprise Reunion with a Life-Saving Donor

The segment also included a heartwarming moment when GMA brought together donor Katrice Randolph and the young girl she helped save.

Katrice, who signed up as a donor after seeing an NMDP table at her college, recalled getting a call nine years later about a 12-year-old girl named Kelsey who needed a bone marrow transplant due to sickle cell disease.

“I love her so much, and she’s the same age as my sister. It was literally like—I have to do this because if this was my sister, I would want somebody to do this for me. So it was an easy yes,” Katrice shared.

In a touching moment, GMA surprised her by bringing Kelsey and her mother on stage, where they shared a tearful embrace with Roberts.

Robin Roberts’ Legacy of Strength and Hope

Roberts’ journey—from battling a life-threatening illness to returning to the GMA anchor desk and using her platform to inspire change—is one of resilience, courage, and hope.

Her impact goes beyond journalism; she has become a beacon of strength for countless individuals facing similar battles. While she admits that revisiting her past struggles is “still very hard,” her willingness to share her story continues to bring hope and healing to others.

As GMA marked this emotional milestone, it was clear that Roberts’ legacy is not just about the past but about the lives she continues to touch every day.
