Robin Roberts is offering her unwavering support to her Good Morning America co-anchor
and dear friend Will Reeve as he embarks on an incredibly personal and emotional journey. Will, the son of the late Christopher Reeve, is stepping into the spotlight in a new way, bringing his father’s story full circle while embarking on a deeply personal expedition that is
already touching hearts around the world. Fresh from celebrating a major win at the BAFTA
Awards for Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, a powerful documentary chronicling the life and legacy of his father, the 32-year-old journalist is preparing for another deeply personal milestone. His latest project, Will Reeve: Finding My Father, is an ABC special that follows Will as he retraces his father’s steps in one of his final pre-accident adventures.
In the special, Will embarks on a journey that mirrors Christopher Reeve’s 1995 documentary In the Wild: Gray Whales with Christopher Reeve, in which the Superman star charted the migration of the Pacific gray whale from the Arctic to Mexico. That expedition, which took place only months before his devastating horseback riding accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down, was one of the last great adventures Christopher undertook before his life changed forever.
The new documentary is set to air on ABC on February 26, and ahead of its highly anticipated debut, Will joined the anchors of Good Morning America to discuss the project. As part of his visit, he was asked to deliver a “15-second elevator pitch” explaining why viewers should tune in to watch the documentary. His response was heartfelt, raw, and deeply moving.
“I reconnect with my father in a way I didn’t know was possible,” Will shared with sincerity. “I learned more about him in a way that has fulfilled me, hopefully for the rest of my life.” As he spoke, he turned to Robin Roberts and the rest of his GMA colleagues, expressing his immense gratitude. “And I’m so grateful to you for executive producing, and to all of you for loving me. And I love you back,” he added, his voice thick with emotion. His words clearly touched Robin, who was left momentarily speechless. Unable to put her feelings into words, she simply deferred to her co-anchors, visibly moved by Will’s tribute.
Christopher Reeve spent much of his later life dedicated to advocacy, becoming an outspoken champion for spinal cord injury research, as well as environmental and human rights causes. His transition from Hollywood star to activist was a powerful transformation, fueled by his personal experience following his tragic accident in 1995. After being thrown from a horse, he was left paralyzed from the neck down and required a wheelchair and ventilator for the remainder of his life. Despite the immense challenges he faced, Christopher continued to fight tirelessly for medical advancements, founding the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation to help fund spinal cord research and improve the quality of life for those living with paralysis. His legacy of courage and resilience continues to inspire millions, even after his passing in 2004 at the age of 52.
In addition to the television special, Will Reeve also penned an emotional and deeply personal essay for ABC News. In it, he reflected on his father’s legacy and the transformative experience of reconnecting with him in ways he never imagined.
“The world knows my dad as Superman, and as the face of spinal cord injury—a heroic figure fighting for others and for himself,” Will wrote. “Many have also learned more about him and our family in a recent award-winning theatrical documentary, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story. But there’s still more to the story, still more to the man.”
Will revealed that he has spent years searching for a way to bring attention to another side of his father—the adventurous spirit, the man who found joy in nature and exploration. Finding My Father allowed him to use Christopher’s 1995 documentary as a starting point to address a deeply personal void.
“It has been my mission for years now to find a way to show the world the Christopher Reeve on display in that hourlong nature documentary and to use the 30-year-old film as an entry point into the void I’ve had in me since he was injured and since he’s been gone,” he continued.
Through his journey to places like San Ignacio Lagoon and St. Lawrence Island, Will gained profound insight—not only into his father’s experiences but also into himself. Witnessing the gray whales in their natural habitat, meeting the incredible people who live along their migration path, and immersing himself in the same adventure his father once took part in was an experience that he describes as life-changing.
“What I discovered by going to San Ignacio Lagoon and St. Lawrence Island and meeting the remarkable people there, and seeing the gray whales on their journey, and taking a camera and an open heart with me defies comprehension,” Will shared. “I left with a better understanding of myself and of my dad; of the natural world and of humanity. Of how they all connect through space and time.”
His words, filled with emotion and introspection, provide a powerful testament to the enduring bond between a father and son—one that transcends time and space. As Will Reeve: Finding My Father prepares to make its debut, audiences will have the opportunity to witness this extraordinary journey and gain a deeper appreciation for both Christopher Reeve’s legacy and Will’s own path to self-discovery. With Robin Roberts standing by his side in support, this heartfelt project is set to be an unforgettable tribute to love, adventure, and the lasting impact of a father’s influence.
