Brian May Opens Up About ‘Scary’ Stroke and His Road to Recovery
Queen legend Brian May has shared new details about the frightening stroke he suffered last year, admitting it temporarily left him struggling with basic tasks.
The 77-year-old guitarist first disclosed his health scare in September, describing it as a “minor stroke.”
However, in a recent interview with Premier Guitar magazine, he revealed the true extent of his condition and the challenges he faced during his recovery.
“I couldn’t even get a fork from the table to my mouth without it going everywhere,” May confessed, recalling how his motor skills were severely impacted. “It was scary.”
Despite the initial difficulties, his recovery progressed quickly. “It’s amazing what you can regain after just a few days,” he explained.
“By sheer willpower, you just start retraining your muscles.”
May now estimates that he has regained about 95% of his abilities, reassuring fans that he is doing well. “That’s enough,” he said confidently, grateful for the progress he has made.
A Health Scare Kept Under Wraps
May first broke the news of his stroke on social media last September, just days after being hospitalized. At the time, he downplayed the severity, calling it a “health hiccup.” However, he has now acknowledged that the situation was more serious than he initially let on.
In a video shared on Instagram, the rock icon revealed that he had suddenly lost control of his arm, a shocking and distressing experience for a musician. “All of a sudden, out of the blue, I didn’t have any control over this arm,” he said. “So it was a little scary.”
May praised the medical team at Frimley Hospital for their swift and expert care. “I had the most fantastic care and attention—blue lights flashing, the lot. Very exciting,” he said with his characteristic humor.
The Road to Recovery
Following his stroke, doctors advised May to take extreme precautions to avoid further health complications. “I was grounded,” he shared. “I wasn’t allowed to go out, drive, get on a plane, or do anything that could raise my heart rate too much.”
Determined to regain his strength, May followed his medical team’s instructions and focused on rehabilitation. His efforts paid off, and today, he feels confident in his ability to perform again.
Fans can rest assured that May is not letting this setback slow him down. While he acknowledged that recovery has taken time and effort, he remains optimistic about the future. “I’m okay and doing what I’m told,” he concluded. “I’m good.”
As one of rock’s most celebrated musicians, May’s resilience and determination continue to inspire fans worldwide. His journey serves as a reminder of the importance of health, perseverance, and a positive mindset in overcoming life’s unexpected challenges.
