Last fall, around the publication of his illustrated memoir, Prince Michael of Greece: Crown, Art, and Fantasy: A Life in Pictures, Prince Michael told T&C, “To be what I am, to be a prince, what is it? It is to be exactly like everyone, but not to be considered like everyone. I have a respect for our past. In churches everywhere, there are relics of saints. These relics are usually a disgusting piece of bone or a disgusting piece of skin that belonged to a saint. We are not disgusting, but we are uninteresting, unassuming relics of a fabulous past.”
He also spoke about why people are so fascinated by royals, saying, “People imagine royalty not exactly as they are. Reality is far less glamorous than what people imagine. People need to dream; people need to escape the daily life with images of fairy tales. So royalty provided this, good or bad. And why not? If it’s done well and if it can make people happy, why not? But I repeat, thank god that they don’t see too much of the reality which is perhaps less inspiring than what they think. Some are inspiring, some are less I would say.”
