Not only SZA, but two famous rappers, Travis Scott and Future, have also left the online community stunned as they face the possibility of going to court over a woman.

On January 8, a copyright infringement complaint was filed against renowned artists SZA, Future, and Travis Scott.

The claim originated from Victory Boyd, an artist signed under Roc Nation, who alleged that the three musicians unlawfully utilized parts of her original track, Like the Way It Sounds, in their song Telekinesis. Boyd’s accusations have brought significant attention to the case, raising questions about the ethical and legal implications surrounding music creation and intellectual property rights.

The complaint explicitly states that Scott, SZA, Future, and other unnamed defendants “intentionally and

willfully” copied Boyd’s original lyrics when they released Telekinesis. Boyd argued that this act was a blatant infringement on her creative work, violating her rights as the sole creator of the original material. According to her, the similarities between her song and the alleged infringing track are undeniable and point to deliberate replication rather than coincidental overlap.

In a significant detail of the case, Boyd claimed she had previously recorded an alternative version of her track with rapper and producer Kanye West. This version, titled Ultrasounds, was allegedly shared with Travis Scott by West. Boyd believes this exchange directly led to the unauthorized usage of her work in Scott’s album Utopia, released in 2023. She has accused Scott of “intentionally and willfully” incorporating elements from her song into his project without obtaining proper consent or providing adequate credit.

The legal document further elaborated on the nature of the alleged infringement. It stated that the creation of Telekinesis involved intentional copying of Boyd’s original lyrics and melody. This claim is supported by Boyd’s assertion that the song was produced and finalized in May 2023, a timeline that coincides with her earlier work. Despite being credited as a songwriter for Telekinesis, Boyd has maintained that she was neither informed about the use of her track nor agreed to its replication and commercial release. This lack of communication and consent has become a cornerstone of her complaint.

Boyd’s grievances extend beyond the alleged copying itself. She is seeking a comprehensive accounting of all profits generated by the marketing, distribution, and national broadcasting of Telekinesis. This includes revenue from sales, streaming platforms, live performances, and any other avenues where the song has been utilized. By requesting a full disclosure of financial gains, Boyd aims to ensure transparency and hold the defendants accountable for any benefits they may have derived from her intellectual property.

The situation has sparked widespread interest, given the high-profile nature of the artists involved. SZA, Future, and Travis Scott are among the most influential figures in the music industry, with substantial fan bases and significant cultural impact. However, as of now, representatives for the three artists have not issued any statements addressing the allegations. The silence has left room for speculation about how the case will unfold and whether it might lead to an out-of-court settlement or a protracted legal battle.

Boyd’s case highlights broader issues related to intellectual property rights in the music industry. Cases of alleged copyright infringement are not uncommon, often involving disputes over melodies, lyrics, or production elements. However, this particular case stands out due to the involvement of multiple major artists and the detailed accusations put forth by Boyd. If her claims are proven, it could set a precedent for how intellectual property disputes are handled, especially in collaborative projects involving numerous creators and stakeholders.

The complaint also underscores the challenges faced by smaller or less-established artists in protecting their creative works. Boyd’s decision to pursue legal action against such prominent figures demonstrates her commitment to defending her rights and the value she places on her artistry. At the same time, it serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency, proper credit, and consent in collaborative artistic endeavors.

As the legal process unfolds, the music industry and fans alike are watching closely. Boyd’s allegations have raised critical questions about the ethical responsibilities of artists and the mechanisms in place to safeguard intellectual property. Whether this case results in a court decision or a negotiated settlement, it is likely to leave a lasting impact on how copyright issues are perceived and addressed within the creative community.
