Demi Moore is giving Mikey Madison the recognition she deserves!
After the 97th Academy Awards on Sunday, Demi Moore’s reaction to losing the Best Actress award went viral.
The nomination was her first in an impressive four-decade-long career, and many expected her to take home the prize.
However, the honor ultimately went to 25-year-old actress Mikey Madison for her role in “Anora.”
Rather than dwell on the unexpected loss, Moore, 62, took to social media to celebrate Madison’s victory.
Moore had been considered the frontrunner for the award after securing wins throughout the season, including a Golden Globe, a Critics Choice Award, and a SAG Award for her performance in “The Substance.”
In the film, Moore portrays Elisabeth Sparkle, a TV superstar whose career plummets after turning 50. Desperate to regain her youth, she takes a magic drug that transforms her into a younger version of herself—but not without severe consequences.
On Monday, the veteran actress shared a video on Instagram documenting her Oscars preparation, expressing her gratitude for the journey. “I am so overwhelmed with gratitude for this experience,” Moore wrote. “It’s been the ride of a lifetime, and we’re just getting started.” She extended thanks to her team, the cast and crew of “The Substance,” her fellow nominees, and everyone who contributed to making the experience joyful.
Then, Moore turned the spotlight on Madison, who surprised many by winning the Best Actress award. “A huge congratulations to #MikeyMadison,” Moore wrote. “Can’t wait to see what you do next.”
Madison herself was visibly stunned when her name was announced as the winner at the star-studded ceremony held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The young actress triumphed over a strong field of nominees, including Moore, Karla Sofia Gascón, Cynthia Erivo, and Fernanda Torres.
In “Anora,” Madison plays a sex worker who marries the son of a powerful Russian oligarch. Once the family discovers the marriage, they go to great lengths to annul it. Directed by Sean Baker, the film was one of the night’s biggest successes, earning four Academy Awards. Madison described her win as “a dream come true.”
Although Moore clapped for Madison as she walked to the stage, her initial reaction didn’t go unnoticed. Seated in the front row, she appeared to grit her teeth upon hearing the result. While maintaining her composure, Moore was seen clapping and muttering a single word.
According to professional lip reader Nicola Hickling, Moore said “nice,” but without a smile. Hickling noted that Moore’s body language suggested she had to force the reaction.
Fans took to social media to express their disappointment, with many commenting on Moore’s post that she had been “robbed” and was “the real winner.” They weren’t alone in believing she had the Oscar locked down. Moore’s “The Substance” co-star, Dennis Quaid, had confidently predicted her victory. Speaking to The Post days before the awards, Quaid revealed, “I knew it by my second day working on that movie. I told Demi she’s going to win an Oscar for it.”
Despite missing out on the award, Moore has remained gracious and reflective. She previously opened up about what the recognition for her role in “The Substance” meant to her.
During her Golden Globes acceptance speech in January, she admitted, “I really wasn’t expecting that. I’m just in shock right now. I’ve been doing this a long time, like, over 45 years, and this is the first time I’ve ever won anything as an actor. I’m just so humbled and so grateful.”
She also recalled a conversation from decades earlier that had stuck with her. “Thirty years ago, I had a producer tell me that I was a ‘popcorn actress,’” she revealed. “At that time, I took it to mean that while I could star in successful films that made a lot of money, I would never be acknowledged for my acting.”
Though she didn’t win the Oscar, Moore didn’t let the moment dampen her spirits. She celebrated the night by indulging in a big bowl of fries, proving that she remains as classy as ever, even in the face of disappointment.
While her loss may have been unexpected, Demi Moore’s recognition of Mikey Madison’s achievement speaks volumes about her character. And with the momentum from “The Substance” still strong, it’s likely that this won’t be her last shot at Oscar gold.
