Loose Women host delivers a brutal verdict on the future of England coach Gareth Southgate after failing to help England break their 58-year curse at Euro 2024.

Loose Women kicked off by discussing the breaking news announcement about England manager Gareth Southgate

Loose Women presenter Charlene White abruptly pasued the latest show to share some breaking news.

The 44-year-old broadcaster was present on Tuesday’s (July 16) panel alongside Coleen Nolan, Kelle Bryan and special guest Natalie Cassidy when she began the programme with a surprising revelation.

Gareth Southgate, England’s manager, has decided to step down from his position, two days post the distressing defeat of the national team against Spain at the Euros finale.

In a statement on X, Southgate said, “As a proud Englishman, it has been the honor of my life to play for and manage England. I have given it my all.”

He continued, “But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager.” As tributes for Southgate begin pouring in, Prince Charles led the way.

Posting a picture of them together, the Royal stated he wanted to express his gratitude not as the president of the Football Association but as an England fan.

The heir apparent to the British throne added in his commemoration: “Thank you for showing humility, compassion, and true leadership under the most intense pressure and scrutiny,” before concluding by lauding Southgate as an “all-round class act”, reports the Mirror.

Gareth Southgate, who took the reins of the England squad in autumn 2016, has carved his name into the history books by guiding the Three Lions to their first World Cup semi-final since Bobby Robson’s era in 1990.

The landmark achievement came during the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where England overcame a notorious penalty shootout curse by defeating Colombia 4-3 on spot-kicks, after previously bowing out in penalties in three World Cups.

Under Southgate’s stewardship, England also made it to the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup held in Qatar and were tantalisingly close to glory at Euro 2020, hosted at Wembley in 2021, but ultimately succumbed to Italy in a heart-wrenching penalty shootout.

Post-Euro 2024 defeat to Spain, Southgate remained tight-lipped about his future with the national team, stating that he had to engage in “conversations with important people behind the scenes”.

After the shock announcement of Gareth Southgate stepping down as England manager, fans and pundits alike are left wondering who will step into his shoes. Many are speculating that former player and current coach, Frank Lampard, could be a potential candidate for the position. Lampard has had a successful career in both playing and coaching, and his leadership abilities are highly regarded in the football world.Another name that has been thrown into the mix is Brendan Rodgers, the current manager of Leicester City. Rodgers has a proven track record of success with Leicester, leading them to an FA Cup victory in 2021. His tactical acumen and ability to develop young talent could make him an appealing choice for the England job.Whoever takes over as the new England manager will have big shoes to fill after Southgate’s successful tenure. The Three Lions have experienced a resurgence under his leadership, and it will be crucial for his successor to continue that momentum. As the nation waits for an official announcement on the new manager, speculation and excitement are building around who will be chosen to lead the team into the future.
