Jenna Bush Hager and Savannah Guthrie’s bond goes beyond the Today show.
While the two have been colleagues for years, their friendship extends into their personal lives in a meaningful way.
In a heartfelt revelation, Jenna shared that she holds a special role in Savannah’s family—she is the godmother of Savannah’s 10-year-old daughter, Vale.
Jenna made the touching announcement during a recent episode of Today while discussing Savannah’s new children’s book, Mostly What God Does is Love You.
As part of the book promotion, Savannah’s daughter, Vale, had the unique opportunity to interview her mother, while her younger brother, Charley, 8, watched from the sidelines.
After the segment aired, Jenna became emotional while praising Vale for her impressive interview skills.
“I’m so lucky to be her godmother,” Jenna said, tearing up.
Savannah, visibly moved by Jenna’s emotions, responded, “I know, look at you crying! You’re going to make me cry.”
Jenna went on to express how proud she was of Vale and the way Savannah has instilled faith in her children.
“Everything you’ve given to them, all of your faith that you pass down so gently without preaching, without demanding, are in those little kids,” Jenna shared, wiping away tears. “And when the world feels dark, that is hope!”
A Shared Spiritual Connection
Later in the morning, Savannah joined Today with Jenna & Friends to discuss her book further alongside Jenna and guest co-host Heather McMahan. During the conversation, Jenna revealed another touching detail about their friendship—Savannah is also a godmother to one of Jenna’s children.
“One of the things you may not know about Savannah and I is that Savannah is my son Hal Hager’s godmother, and I am her daughter Vale’s godmother,” Jenna said.
Heather McMahan was visibly touched by the revelation, exclaiming, “Oh, that’s beautiful!”
This mutual bond highlights just how deep their friendship runs. Beyond their professional partnership, Jenna and Savannah have cultivated a relationship built on trust, faith, and shared family values.
Conversations About Faith and Friendship
During the discussion, Jenna reflected on the importance of faith in their friendship. She explained that she and Savannah often have meaningful conversations about their beliefs and values, which has strengthened their connection over the years.
Savannah echoed that sentiment, explaining that one of the most rewarding aspects of writing her children’s books has been the conversations they have sparked.
“Even with people I know, it kind of opened up this new avenue for deeper conversation,” she said. “It doesn’t mean that you agree. In fact, you could be of different faiths or no faith at all. But having that connection and talking about things that matter, that’s what I feel like I notice most on the book tour. There’s such a hunger and thirst for that, and it’s fun to be in those conversations.”
Their Daughters’ Special Bond
Just as Savannah and Jenna share a deep friendship, their eldest daughters, Vale and Mila, have also formed a close bond. The two young girls have spent special moments together, including a memorable visit to the White House in December 2024. Savannah shared snapshots of their time at the event, capturing the growing friendship between the next generation.
In addition to their White House adventure, Savannah and Jenna also took their daughters on a fun-filled trip to Palm Beach, Florida. While discussing the vacation on-air, Jenna revealed the sentimental reason behind the getaway.
“We planned this, I think, before 2024,” Jenna explained. “We planned it because Vale was baptized. And Mila said, ‘Girls, I feel like we need a girls’ trip.’”
Savannah laughed, adding that Vale was just as enthusiastic about the idea. “Vale was like, ‘We need a girls’ trip!’” she recalled.
A Lasting Friendship
Jenna and Savannah’s friendship is proof that work relationships can blossom into something much deeper. From supporting each other on Today to standing by one another’s families in significant life moments, the two have built a lasting bond that goes beyond television.
Their role as each other’s children’s godmothers is just another example of how their connection has evolved into something truly special. Whether sharing personal moments on-air or planning memorable family trips, Jenna and Savannah continue to cherish and nurture a friendship that is built on love, faith, and mutual respect.
