Eamonn Holmes was “terrified” of Ruth Langsford during their relationship, according to mutual pal Liz Taylor.
The popular TV pair surprised fans earlier this month with news they’d parted ways after a 14-year marriage.
While Ruth, 64, hasn’t personally commented on the split, she’s openly discussed their relationship and how they got together in the past.
During a chat with Liz on her podcast ‘Events That Made Me’ back in 2020,
she revealed how she and Eamonn first met in the television industry, which was a “rocky start” for them both.
The two eventually bonded over acknowledging the difficulties in the industry – job losses, contract changes – leading them to romantic involvement.
The iconic duo officially married in 2010 and had their only child together, Jack, when he was 22, about two years later.
Speaking on the early stages of both their careers and relationships, Ruth said: “We have a healthy respect with what we do. I do smile sometimes because I think there were people, a lot in regional TV, who thought I got onto TV when I started seeing Eamonn, and that’s why I’m here.”
Liz replied amusingly: “What makes me laugh is he’s bloody terrified of you…,” sending Ruth into fits of laughter. In 2019, the couple shared what they believe are the secrets of their then-thriving marriage on the podcast ‘How To Stay Married’, reports the Express.
Eamonn opened up about the key to a successful relationship, stating: “The secret is compromise, the secret is consideration and lots of conjugals.”
Ruth added: “I would say laughter is what keeps us together. Eamonn’s very good actually. We have a very equal relationship, it’s very equal in our marriage. People will say, ‘who wears the trousers? ‘ Well, nobody. You find your way, he’s not the boss and I’m not the boss in modern relationships that’s probably how it should be.”
Speculation about troubles in their marriage began in April when fans noticed the couple hadn’t been seen together for several weeks. On May 25, a spokesperson confirmed to The Sun on Sunday that Eamonn and Ruth’s marriage had ended and they were proceeding with a divorce.
Sources close to the couple indicated that they had been living separate lives before deciding to part ways.
An insider stated to the press: “Eamonn and Ruth’s relationship changed when they left This Morning. They started moving in different directions in their careers and their priorities started to change.”
The same source revealed that Eamonn was desirous of returning to Belfast while Ruth had no intention to relocate. “As her ITV career continued, Eamonn went down another path and they became ships in the night,” they further unveiled.
Yet another source indicated that despite parting ways, the couple plans to remain cordial, with Ruth continuing to provide support during Eamonn’s health struggle.
