Cole Palmer has already angered Spain ahead of the Euro 2024 final. Luis de la Fuente Castillo’s side are determined to get one over the Chelsea and England forward on Sunday.
Palmer, who assisted Ollie Watkins’ dramatic 90th-minute winner against Netherlands on Wednesday.
Was involved in a feisty encounter against Spain while playing for England Under 21s last July.
That came during the U21s European Championship final – a game in which the young Lions won 1-0.
But the incident that annoyed Spain occurred when Palmer celebrated in front of their bench after scoring the only goal.
The former Manchester City winger curled home a free-kick via a deflection, causing delirium from the England players and staff.
Palmer then decided to go over to the Spain touchline and celebrate.
A brawl erupted and England coach Ashley Cole was sent off, with Spain’s Sergio Gomez criticising Palmer, who was his teammate at the time. He told Cadena SER: “It surprised me.
“He [Palmer] didn’t want to apologise or anything like some of his other team-mates. I don’t know, I would have celebrated it in a different way and my team-mates would have done it in a different way as well.
“They [England] have the attitude they want to have. This is not the first time something like this has happened with this team. We have tried to represent our country in the best possible way and have the utmost respect for all our rivals. They wanted to celebrate it like this and also after the missed penalty.”
According to AS, Spain were driven ‘crazy’ by Palmer’s ‘arrogant attitude’, which they haven’t forgotten. The chance to get one over Palmer is reportedly one they are looking forward to.
Palmer has played alongside a couple of the Spain players at club level, however. Him and Marc Cucurella are teammates at Chelsea, while he shared a dressing room with Rodri and Aymeric Laporte at Manchester City. Alongside this, Palmer has played against several of them before.
It’s unlikely that Palmer will start the Euro 2024 final. The 22-year-old is expected to be named among the substitutes with Gareth Southgate set to pick a similar, if not the same team, to the one that started and impressed in the 2-1 win over Netherlands in the semi-final.
