Ashley James of This Morning faces criticism for making remarks heavily laden with gender discrimination on air, stating, “Men should only be allowed to be men, not any other gender!”

This Morning’s Ashley James didn’t hold back as she slammed a guest’s ‘dangerous’ words on Thursday’s show.

Ashley, 37, who regularly appears on the ITV chat show to discuss the latest news and headlines, was sat with Danni Levy on Thursday’s show, who is the Executive Editor of the recently relaunched Loaded magazine.

During the show, host Ben Shephard asked: “You’ve said Danni, that the reason you brought this back while promoting it is that ‘men need to be men’ and this is what your magazine is now offering, can you explain what you mean by that?”

To which Danni said: “I think that there is a lot out there for women. I feel very well catered for in the media. We have Loose Women, we have Woman’s Hour, there is an abundance of material available for women in the magazine space.”

The guest continued: “In these publications and on these television and radio shows, we are allowed as women to, and I probably could have used a better word, ‘ogle’ men openly. Not in an impertinent manner but we’re allowed to look at a man amorously or flirtatiously, and say: ‘Cor, he’s fit’, and women are allowed to do that.

“Men, I feel they’re not allowed to do that, men are not allowed to be men anymore. They’re not allowed to be unapologetic straight men. Male suicide accounts for the highest death rate amongst men under 50 in the UK, it’s the largest form of death, is that not worrying that men feel as if though they don’t have someone to reach out to, to speak to, a platform to vent and laugh and joke and chat to other men? They really don’t and the more I speak to men, the more I realise that they need this.”

However, Ashley wasn’t impressed with the views expressed as she hit back with: “It’s very interesting that you rightly bring up the male suicide rate, I don’t think men are committing suicide because they can’t ogle women and be men.

“Men are, disproportionately committing suicide because of toxic masculinity, which puts men in a box and says: ‘Men can’t discuss feelings, men can’t be open about feelings.’ Men have to be men in the stereotypical ways that you say, of course a man is allowed to say that a woman is attractive in the same way that a woman is allowed to say that a man is attractive.

“But when you say that men are red blooded and they need to be men and by that you’re saying they should be allowed to look at women in a certain way and you’re insinuating that because equality has progressed and feminism has progressed, and in a way that now men can’t ogle women. I think it’s a really disappointing and quite dangerous thing to say.”

However, Dani was quick to respond as she said: “I didn’t say that and I feel as if people are really running with this ‘ogle’ term”, adding: “I’m not saying that Loaded is merely a platform to ogle women. It’s far from it. In actual fact, you will see no nudity in Loaded and there are only two females in the relaunch edition of Loaded. I’m simply saying I feel as if men should be allowed to be men.”

Host Ben then pointed out that she had originally used the word ‘ogle’ in a past interview to which she claimed: “I used that term because that term was put to me in a telephone interview.” She continued: “I do think that men should be allowed to appreciate the choice of a better word beautiful, attractive women. That said, I’m not saying that the lack of ogling material is the reason for high male suicide rates or anything like that. They are completely different topics!”, adding that men need a “safe space” in the media.

However, Ashley still wasn’t impressed as she urged Danni to be “really careful” with her use of language. She said: “When you’re saying that men should be allowed to be men and ‘ogle women’. I would love for you to just be more mindful of the language that you use.”

Taking to Twitter, now X, viewers were also quick to slam the interview. One person said: “This woman shouldn’t use mental health in this discussion! #thismorning”, a different account put: “Did she really just say men are committing suicide because they can’t ogle women? I just don’t know where to begin with that one” while another wrote: “She suggested men commit suicide because they cannot ogle women. WTF.”
