MGK credits his daughter, Casie, for helping him get sober after years of substance abuse.
“It started with my daughter saying, ‘Dad, you know I can tell when you’re high,’” the “Bloody Valentine” singer, 34, shared on the “Million Dollaz Worth of Game” podcast Sunday.
“It broke my heart. It was like the ultimate let-down.”
MGK, who previously used the stage name Machine Gun Kelly, said Casie, now 15, made this revelation to her father about three or four years ago when she was 11 or 12.
However, the “Bad Things” singer admitted that it took some time for her heartbreaking words to sink in because “obviously drugs have a vice grip on you.”
MGK then opened up about some of the childhood trauma he experienced that led him down a path of drug use, particularly how he felt “ashamed” as a kid because he wasn’t who his father wanted him to be.
“Really that’s just a reflection of him [my dad] not being who he wanted to be,” the “Emo Girl” singer recognized.
“To be the father I wish my dad would have been, I have to break this generational curse for my kid.”
MGK welcomed Casie in 2009 with ex Emma Cannon and has maintained a close bond with his daughter, often bringing her on tour or to awards shows.
Aside from the teen, the “Lonely” rocker previously said his on-again, off-again girlfriend Megan Fox was “extremely helpful” as he went through “psychological withdrawals” after entering rehab last August.
“I continue to embrace that this journey is gonna be hard for me, but I accept it and forgive myself,” MGK shared on the “Dumb Blonde” podcast earlier this month, also marking his one-year sober anniversary.
“I’m also really hard on myself,” the “Forget Me Too” singer continued. “I’m just happy that I’m able to start to be comfortable enough to show people who I am because I kind of depended on my art to do that.”
