Greatest Hits radio presenter Ken Bruce has aggravated Taylor Swift fans after revealing the savage reason why he has banned the singer from his station playlist
Greatest Hits radio presenter Ken Bruce has faced a fierce backlash after taking a vicious swipe at Taylor Swift.
The 73-year-old DJ, who departed BBC Radio 2 last year after three decades at the station, has angered the Swifties with the decree that he won’t play her music to his 3.8 million weekly listeners until the popular singer stops writing songs about her ex-boyfriends.
Speaking to The Mail on Sunday, Ken said: “All her songs are the same. I’ll play her on my station when she writes something that isn’t about her ex-boyfriends. Great radio songs have three beats and then they’re straight into the song, not these long intros that she does.” The radio legend went on to point out that his listeners might not be of the generation that would listen to Taylor, as well as that her songs are too new for the Greatest Hits station playlist. Ken said: “We’re a 70s, 80s and 90s radio show as our core audience is older.”
Nevertheless, Taylor Swift fans were not going to let this lie and were soon on the attack on social media, as they rubbished Ken’s claimed for not playing their music idol. One hit out at Ken, posting on X, formerly known as Twitter : “here’s literally so many songs that don’t have a romantic theme at all and so many more that revolve around a fictional romance NOT a personal one e.g. cowboy like me, gold rush, right where you left me, cardigan etc.” Another slammed Ken, commenting: “Leave it to an old white man to be completely out of touch….. shocker.”
The Scottish DJ looked to clarify another reason why Taylor Swift wouldn’t be on the playlist: “For our audience, we do 70s, 80s and 90s music. We do early noughties and 2010s not very many but we expect people to know things from recent and current music, only the biggest names though.”
After scooping three gongs at the TRIC Awards for Best Daytime show, Best Radio Show and Radio Personality in June, Ken told the audience that he was pleased that he’s had a chance to reinvent himself. Ken said on stage: “I started 47 years ago this month, it’s amazing I’m still standing up here. It’s been an absolute joy over the age of 60 to reinvent myself as something new.” The Scottish star then went on to joke: “Now I’m looking forward to doing something else, maybe standing as President of the United States. It’s lovely to see Scotland winning a trophy!”
Speaking to The Sun after his prestigious win, Ken said: “It’s a real privilege actually to have moved on and for people to make the noise and say, you know, you’ve done all right.”
