Since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made the shock decision to quit the UK for a seemingly less stressful life in America.
The relationship between the couple and the Royal Family hit an all time low.
And while reports soon after the couple’s marriage, suggested that Meghan was struggling to form a connection with particular members of her new family.
It seems her bond with King Charles was stronger than ever. And during a trip to the Scottish Castle of Mey, in 2018.
Prince Harry revealed that their bond was solidified even further, when Meghan shared that she had the same birthday as the late Queen Mother – who King Charles adored.
In his memoir titled Spare, which was released last year, he recalled the moment his wife and father deepened their connection during “pre-dinner cocktails.”
He said: “One night, over pre-dinner cocktails, Fred Astaire playing in the background, it emerged that Meg shared a birthdate with Pa’s favorite person: Gan-Gan [the Queen Mother].”
On realising their common ground, Prince Harry added: ” ‘Amazing,’ Pa said with a smile. At the memory of Gan-Gan, and the link between her and my bride, he suddenly became buoyant, telling stories I’d never heard, essentially performing, showing off for Meg.”
But unfortunately, since that moment, the relationship between Prince Harry and his father has gone from bad to worse following the couple’s Netflix docuseries Harry and Meghan – and the release of Spare. A source told People: “He [Prince Harry] gets ‘unavailable right now.’ His calls go unanswered. He has tried to reach out about the King’s health, but those calls go unanswered too.”
However, it has been alleged that Prince Harry tried to make amends when he returned to the UK following the King’s cancer diagnosis earlier this year. But it had been claimed the King snubbed the Duke. And again, when Prince Harry returned to the UK for the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games at St. Paul’s Cathedral, it was alleged King Charles failed to meet him due to a “full schedule.”
Earlier this month, the Mirror reported that a spokesperson for the Duke said: “It, unfortunately, will not be possible due to His Majesty’s full programme. The Duke of course is understanding of his father’s diary of commitments and various other priorities and hopes to see him soon.” And royal expert Jennie Bond also made her feelings known of King Charles and Prince Harry’s strained relationship. In an interview with Sky News, she said she was left “gob-smacked” by the fact the pair did not meet, even briefly.
She said: “I think it speaks volumes about the depth of the rift. I can’t understand it. I’ve spent 35 years reporting on this family and they still astonish me at every turn. Perhaps it’s because I’m very close to my family. I can’t comprehend how, with your younger son – for all that has happened – you can’t even share a croissant with him.” She added: “The king is busy. He still has engagements and is under treatment for cancer, but still, there must have been a window of opportunity. For me, it speaks volumes about the depth of rift.”
