Princess Anne has committed a small royal faux pas and appears to have snubbed her sister-in-law Queen Camilla during the annual Commonwealth Day service on Monday.
Anne and Camilla were joined by Prince William, Prince Edward and his wife the Duchess of Edinburgh for the service.
While Kate Middleton skipped the event to attend a “private appointment”.
Footage from the event shows Anne greeting her sister-in-law with a casual kiss on the cheek but refusing to curtsy.
Despite royal protocol suggesting that anyone with an HRH title should bow to the sovereign and his wife.
The blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment only became obvious because Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, did follow protocol and politely curtsied to the Queen moments earlier.
The Duchess of Edinburgh is known to be a stickler for royal protocol and even begrudgingly curtsied to Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex.
Sophie was reportedly “relieved” when she was elevated to the title of Duchess of Edinburgh which meant she would no longer have to curtsy to Meghan.
While Anne’s close relationship with her brother King Charles is well-known, the Princess Royal reportedly has a much cooler relationship with Camilla.
The two senior royal women first crossed paths in the 1970s before Camila became involved with Charles, when both Anne and Camilla dated guards officer Andrew Parker Bowles.
Three decades later, Camilla became Anne’s sister-in-law when she married Charles in a low-key ceremony at St George’s chapel in 2005.
Since then, Anne and Camilla are understood to have a cordial relationship, but the Princess Royal was reportedly privately outraged when she found out Camilla would be known as “Queen” instead of “Queen consort” in 2022.
The Princess Royal also raised eyebrows after she gave the Queen something of a backhanded compliment last year.
“This role is not something that she would have been a natural for, but she does it really well,” she told an interviewer for the documentary Charles III: The Coronation.
Earlier this month, it emerged that Anne was allegedly annoyed Camilla had taken a full week off from royal duties following Charles’s cancer diagnosis while the Princess had a full calendar of engagements.
“Anne’s doing her best to keep her frustrations to herself,” a royal insider told New Idea magazine.
“It’s not the time to start causing more problems when the palace is in such peril, but it’s not easy when she has more than stepped up with her duties and Camilla’s checked out.”
