Lady Gaga put on a lavish performance as the Paris Olympics kicked off its opening ceremony this evening (July 26).
The superstar entertainer took to the stage in the city of love to give a French cabaret style performance in the country’s native language.
However, despite the elaborate choreography and her flawless vocals viewers took umbrage at the fact she isn’t actually French.
The ceremony was intended to highlight the best of the country as fans questioned why the French talent had not performed and took to X to vent.
@prince_chas_cca commented: “I won’t lie I was surprised Lady Gaga was performing as she’s not even French.” @Juliet171048141 enquired: “What is Lady Gaga singing?
They didn’t have French singers available? #Olympics #OpeningCeremony#Paris2024.”
@badgal_cd admitted her performance had confused their father writing: “Dad just asked whether Lady GaGa was French and mum replied no she’s talented #Paris2024.” @frosted_north quipped of the performance: “I appear to have stumbled upon an episode of Eurovision on BBC one. #Paris2024.”
@UllaMR was unimpressed and felt the whole thing was “messy” writing: “Lady Gaga at her worst, uncoordinated can-can dancers and plethora of boats in French alphabetical order but with English signs. And it is raining in #Paris. A bit messy #Olympics #OpeningCeremony.”
However @Petjepindakaas was enjoying the show overall finding the setting on the River Seine a nice change.
“Very refreshing #OpeningCeremony nice performance from the “french” lady gaga! #Paris2024 I like it, the French way a change from every time in stadiums,” they opined.
Gaga had been spotted rehearsing her elaborate set for the ceremony earlier in the day despite weather forecasts indicating it could be a washout.
Meteo-France, the French weather service, had predicted “flooding rains”, which is the equivalent of 15 days of rainfall, for this evening.
By late afternoon, skies were already grey and there was intermittent drizzle which turned to rain showers during the opening ceremony
Alongside the weather warnings earlier today the city’s transport was plunged into chaos as its vital train line was targeted by vandals carrying out “malicious acts.”
They lit fires at key facilities earlier today, bringing trains to a halt and affecting 800,000 passengers trying to get to the games including athletes and spectators.
Several high-speed lines surrounding Paris have been hit leading to delays and causing issues for people trying to get to the location.
