The Today show family came together for an emotional farewell as longtime co-host Hoda Kotb marked her final day on the morning program after 17 years.
Savannah Guthrie, Al Roker, Craig Melvin, Carson Daly, and others paid tribute to Kotb,
celebrating her impact on the show and the deep friendships she formed during her tenure.
A Farewell Filled with Love
On Friday, January 10, Guthrie kicked off the heartfelt send-off by expressing her admiration for Kotb, describing her as someone who embodies love.
“When we thought about how best to celebrate you, Hoda, and what you’ve meant to all of us, it was really just one word — love,”
Guthrie said warmly. “You are love. And we love you. You’re all about it. We’re so inspired by you every day.”
Despite the celebratory tone, Guthrie couldn’t hide her emotions and jokingly asked, “If I don’t do this interview, does that mean she won’t leave?”
A Sisterly Bond
The bond between Guthrie and Kotb was a central theme throughout the tribute, with Guthrie calling Kotb “like a sister.” She reminisced about their cherished moments together before the show, sharing how their morning conversations in the makeup chair were sometimes so emotional that the makeup artists had to redo their work.
“Hoda, I love you. I love you deeply,” Guthrie declared. “And like I always tell you, whether you’re sitting next to me or not. Whether we get up at 4 o’clock in the morning together or not, I will always be by your side, and you will always be by mine.”
Craig Melvin Reflects on Kotb’s Impact
Craig Melvin, who is set to take over Kotb’s co-anchor seat, spoke about her unique ability to connect with people. “Hoda doesn’t do interviews, she has conversations,” he said. “She’s not just looking you in the eyes, she’s peering into your soul.”
Kotb, known for her warmth and authenticity, has been a comforting presence for viewers and colleagues alike, making her departure an emotional moment for the entire team.
Al Roker Shares a Personal Story
Longtime Today show weatherman Al Roker became emotional as he recalled how Kotb supported him during his serious health battle in 2022.
“I was gravely ill. I never had any idea how sick I was,” Roker admitted. “I was in the hospital, and I think Hoda was there if not every day, almost every day… It got to the point where I think people thought she was a doctor.”
Despite his sadness over her departure, Roker expressed happiness for Kotb’s next chapter, acknowledging that she will now have more time to spend with her two daughters, Hope and Haley. “I am going to miss you coming out of that dressing room every morning, but you know what? You, Hope, and Haley get to come out of your rooms and see each other every morning, and so, how could I be sad?”
An Emotional Goodbye
Overwhelmed by the heartfelt tributes, Kotb teared up and playfully called out her colleagues, saying, “That was not fair.” Struggling to articulate her emotions, she simply added, “I just want to say thanks.”
She then turned to Melvin and expressed confidence in his ability to step into her role. “Craig, I’m so happy for you. You’ve earned this. You own this. And come Monday at seven o’clock a.m., I am going to be dead asleep, but you’re going to be fantastic.”
The most touching moment, however, came when she addressed Guthrie directly. Wiping away tears, Kotb told her co-host, “You’re my person, my person.” She went on to express her deep appreciation, recalling times when Guthrie had been there for her during difficult moments, including personal challenges with her daughter Hope’s health. “You know who shows up for everybody? This girl,” Kotb said, pointing at Guthrie. “She’s always in the room. And I love you.”
A Legacy of Warmth and Inspiration
Kotb’s departure comes after nearly two decades of bringing joy and inspiration to viewers. Since announcing her decision to leave Today in September, she has reflected on her time with the show and what comes next.
Speaking in an interview before her final episode, Guthrie shared that while she was initially shocked by Kotb’s decision, she wasn’t entirely surprised. “She and I have had many, many conversations about life and what does it mean in our hopes and our dreams,” Guthrie explained. “So I wasn’t surprised.”
She praised Kotb for taking a bold leap into an unknown future. “It’s so courageous and bold and amazing. She doesn’t know what’s next, but she knows what she can do, and I love that. I’m inspired by that.”
Although Guthrie expressed sadness about the end of their on-air partnership, she made it clear that their friendship will last beyond their time together on Today. “If I had it my way, we’d be together forever,” she said.
Craig Melvin Steps Into the Role
With Kotb stepping away, Melvin is set to take over her co-anchor seat beginning Monday, January 13. Kotb offered her full support, telling him, “You are literally made for this job. You have all the things that this job needs. You’re the right person for it.”
As Today moves forward without Kotb in the anchor chair, her legacy of kindness, warmth, and unwavering support for those around her will undoubtedly live on. While her next chapter remains uncertain, one thing is clear—she will always have a home in the hearts of her Today family and viewers.
