Fred Sirieix, the well-known host of First Dates, has taken a swipe at ITV’s Love Island, 

claiming that participants on his show are in it purely for romance rather than money or fame. 

The 53-year-old maître d’, who has been a familiar face on television since First Dates debuted in 2013, 

insists that contestants on his show have genuine intentions, unlike those on Love Island, who must couple up strategically to remain in the competition.

Fred emphasized that First Dates offers something completely different from the reality dating format seen in Love Island, 

where contestants live in a luxurious villa and compete to remain in the game. 

He argued that while his show provides only a brief moment in the spotlight, it focuses on genuine human connections, free from any ulterior motives related to wealth or celebrity status.

In a recent interview, Fred explained why he believes First Dates stands apart from other dating reality shows. He pointed out that contestants on his program arrive without any financial incentives or promises of fame. Instead, they simply meet their blind dates in a specially set-up restaurant, where cameras capture their first impressions, conversations, and chemistry—or lack thereof.

At the end of each episode, couples reveal whether they would like to see each other again, marking the true test of romantic potential. Unlike Love Island, where contestants must maintain a partnership to avoid elimination, First Dates does not impose such conditions on participants.

Fred made it clear that he has no intention of outright attacking Love Island but stressed the authenticity of his own show. “I’m not here to diss Love Island or anything like that,” he said. “But people don’t come on First Dates because they want to make money or be famous. They come to find love, and that is pure.”

He went on to highlight the lack of external motivations on First Dates, saying, “There is no prize, no money, and no glory besides finding love. They have five minutes on television and can hopefully come back home with a person they want to be with for the rest of their lives. It’s beautiful—I’m a romantic at heart.”
