Sam Allardyce and John Terry believe Gareth Southgate has a future at the head of the England team, despite his defeat at the Euro 2024 final.

The Three Lions were inches away from glory this Sunday, but Spain won the 17th edition of the UEFA European Football Championship for the fourth time in a row after a tense confrontation in Berlin.

Since the gruelling defeat, footy experts in the likes of Gary Lineker have urged England manager Gareth Southgate to quit and leave another manager to take over.

However, during a chat with Kate Garraway and Richard Madeley this Monday (July 15), both Sam Allardyce and John Terry have given their verdict as the latter admitted he hoped Gareth would keep his position despite the backlash, with Terry declaring “I hope he stays”.

The coach and football player was live from Surrey, South East England, as he said: “I’m still happy with what Gareth has done with this group of players”

“I think the way he has them playing is excellent at the moment and I think the togetherness is the biggest thing, which we didn’t have,” he added.

“I think Sam will agree that in my generation, we didn’t have the togetherness that Gareth’s done. So I hope he stays.” But the criticism has been rife since the Euro 2024 final.

After England’s disappointing 2-1 defeat, football enthusiasts decided to let Three Lions captain Harry Kane know they weren’t impressed by his performance on the field by taking to the comment section of his most recent post.

After a slow first half and a first goal by Spain, Harry Kane came off, leaving Kyle Walker to take over as captain for the next half of the game – and prompting the arrival of super subs Ollie Watkins and Cole Palmer.

Expectations were high for Ollie after his last-minute winning goal helped England secure a place in the final and catapulted him into the spotlight.

But his team-mate Cole Palmer was eventually the one to even out the scores. Sadly, this still wasn’t enough for England to win as Spain’s Mikel Oyarzabal shot the last goal at the 86th minute, allowing his team to win the tournament.

While he has praised him over his hard work, Gary made it clear that it was time for a change as he said: “I think he’s been the right person to bring the nation together in terms of the football team.”

He added: “And, now, maybe it’s time for someone else with a more modern, attacking style of football. Because I think the game’s gone away from being successful if you’re really defensive.”
