David Tennant was criticized as arrogant after boldly declaring in his latest interview that he WILL SAVE Doctor Who.

David Tennant has emerged as the odds-on favorite to make a shocking return as Doctor Who,

as speculation grows over the long-term future of the BBC’s iconic sci-fi series.

The 52-year-old actor, who first played the Time Lord from 2005 to 2010

before reprising the role in 2023 for the show’s 60th-anniversary specials, is now being tipped as a potential successor to Ncuti Gatwa.

Reports suggest Gatwa could exit the show after just two series due to uncertainty surrounding its future beyond 2025.

Doctor Who’s Future in Doubt?

Recent reports indicate that Doctor Who may face an uncertain fate, as Disney+, which partnered with the BBC to fund the latest iteration of the series, is allegedly waiting to see the performance of the second season before committing to a continuation.

Traditionally, pre-production work for future series begins while the current one is still filming, but insiders claim that no such preparations have been made for a third season. This lack of forward planning has fueled concerns that the show could face cancellation or an extended hiatus.

A source told The Times:

“Normally, shows this big begin pre-production long in advance. One would expect series three work to be happening now and for the production to be clear on who the Doctor will be. If the BBC cannot confirm a continuation of the Disney deal, then it is a worrying sign.”

Betting Odds Suggest Tennant Could Return as the Doctor

As speculation mounts over Ncuti Gatwa’s potential departure, bookmakers have named David Tennant as a possible replacement. According to odds published by betideas.com, Tennant is currently at 5/1 to take over the role permanently. He ranks third in the betting, behind Josh O’Connor (2/1) and Jack Lowden (4/1).

Lee Astley, a spokesperson for betideas.com, stated:

“Ncuti Gatwa’s tenure as the Doctor appears to be coming to a premature end, and we reckon there’s a firm chance the BBC turns to David Tennant once again to try and steer the series back on track. Tennant is arguably the most-loved Doctor in the programme’s history.”

Is Ncuti Gatwa Planning to Exit the Show?

Reports suggest that Ncuti Gatwa has already filmed a regeneration scene, which would mark his exit from the series. A source told The Sun:

“Ncuti doesn’t want to be tied to the series beyond this and plans to relocate to Los Angeles, with several Hollywood projects lined up. His team also sees a lot of fan backlash from the series and doesn’t want his association with Doctor Who to affect future career opportunities.”

This follows earlier reports that Gatwa’s third-season involvement was uncertain. His comments on The Graham Norton Show—where he mentioned filming for a third season—were mysteriously edited out of the broadcast, raising further speculation.

Controversy Over Recent Storylines

In recent years, Doctor Who has faced criticism from some viewers for its inclusion of politically charged themes, diverse representation, and unconventional villains. While many fans have praised the show’s inclusivity, others argue that the focus on social issues has overshadowed the storytelling.

Critics have pointed to the introduction of transgender and non-binary characters and a drag queen villain as examples of what they claim is an agenda-driven approach. Some insiders allege that attempts to refocus the series on traditional storytelling have been ignored.

An unnamed source told The Sun:

“There’s a growing concern that the show has become too focused on an agenda rather than telling great stories. Some people within production have raised these issues, only to be dismissed or ignored.”

The BBC Responds to Cancellation Rumors

Despite ongoing speculation, the BBC has denied claims that Doctor Who is at risk of cancellation. A spokesperson stated:

“Doctor Who has not been shelved. As we have previously stated, the decision on Season 3 will be made after Season 2 airs. The deal with Disney+ was for 26 episodes, and exactly half of those still have to transmit.”

What’s Next for Doctor Who?

With uncertainty surrounding Doctor Who’s future, fans are left wondering what will happen next. If Ncuti Gatwa does leave after two seasons, it remains unclear who will step into the role of the Doctor—or if the show will even continue beyond 2025.

David Tennant’s name is now firmly in the mix as a potential replacement, but whether the actor, who has previously stated he felt “too old” to return full-time, would actually accept the role remains to be seen.

For now, the fate of Doctor Who rests on the success of its upcoming second season, and whether Disney+ decides to renew its partnership with the BBC. Until then, the future of the TARDIS remains in limbo.
