Jenna Bush Hager left her Today co-host, Ego Nwodim, utterly speechless during Friday’s episode of Today with Jenna & Friends
when she shared a surprising story about the day she gave birth to her first child. The candid revelation had both her co-host and the production crew gasping in disbelief,
as Jenna recounted the unusual circumstances surrounding the birth of her daughter, Mila, back in April 2013.
During a lively conversation with Saturday Night Live star Ego Nwodim, the pair were discussing the recent trend of men infiltrating women-dominant fitness classes.
It was during this discussion that Jenna, now 43, recalled an unexpected moment from the day she gave birth to her daughter.
The memory left Ego wide-eyed as Jenna casually mentioned that, on the very day her first child was born, she had attended a SoulCycle class.
“I went to a SoulCycle class on the day my first child was born,” Jenna casually shared, setting the stage for the humorous exchange that followed. As soon as she mentioned this, Ego gasped in shock, prompting Jenna to quickly clarify, “She was very early! Don’t gasp at me!”
Ego, taken aback, asked, “But you were nine months pregnant?” To which Jenna responded, “I was eight and a half. She came at about 35 and a half weeks or something—she was early.” The crowd seemed to share in Ego’s astonishment, as Jenna continued, describing a conversation she had with another person in the class. “I was on the bike and this guy behind me goes, ‘Girl, you’re huge, we’re gonna have to carry you out like a Trojan horse!’”
Jenna’s response to the comment, which she clearly found insensitive, was filled with humor and honesty. “And I was like, ‘Oh wait, now I don’t mind if you come to the class, but please don’t comment on my size!’” Jenna recalled with a laugh. “I’ll never forget it.”
Ego, still shocked by the story, responded with a candid remark, saying, “I don’t even know what that means!” Jenna then jokingly explained, “I’m not sure, I think it just means I looked like a huge horse,” which led to Ego voicing her disagreement with the comment: “Yeah, I don’t like that.” Jenna nodded in agreement, acknowledging that she didn’t find the comparison flattering, but both she and Ego agreed that Jenna’s determination to stay active during pregnancy was impressive.
The conversation then shifted to the birth itself. Jenna shared how, during her baby shower, her water unexpectedly broke, and her twin sister Barbara was the first to call her husband, Henry Hager, to inform him. Jenna fondly recounted how Henry initially didn’t believe the news. “He was like, ‘Those sisters have played pranks on me, I’m not falling for it!’” Jenna laughed. However, one of the show’s producers, Carrie, was present at the time, and her husband played a key role in convincing Henry to take the situation seriously. “Carrie’s husband said, ‘No Henry, I know Barbara and Jenna would act like that, but Carrie would never lie to me. You need to go to the hospital,’” Jenna recalled.
Jenna went on to give birth to her daughter, Mila, on April 13, 2013, and today, she is also the proud mother of two more children—Poppy, 9, and Hal, 5—whom she shares with Henry.
In a touching moment during a previous Today with Hoda & Jenna episode in July 2023, Jenna admitted that during her pregnancy with Mila, she questioned if she could love anything as much as her beloved cat, Bernadette. Her hilarious confession sparked laughter from her co-host Hoda Kotb and the production crew. “I remember saying it to my friend Crystal—she was the only friend I had who had children at the time,” Jenna explained. “She said, ‘Jenna, your heart has room, but also hilarious that you think your cat is gonna compare.’”
The funny and unexpected admission about her love for Bernadette left Hoda visibly surprised, with Hoda responding, “That just speaks volumes about you and your cat relationship, I didn’t know it was like that.” Jenna’s candidness about the complex and emotional journey of becoming a parent resonated with many, offering a lighthearted but honest look at the realities of motherhood.
Jenna’s story about the day she gave birth and her ability to keep a sense of humor throughout her pregnancy not only entertained her co-host but also reminded viewers of the unique and often unpredictable experiences that come with parenthood. Whether it’s an early labor or a cat that holds a special place in her heart, Jenna’s authentic moments continue to endear her to her audience and leave a lasting impression on her fans.
