Savannah Guthrie recently revealed a humorous anecdote about cleaning up after her long-time Today show co-anchor Hoda Kotb.
Appearing alongside Craig Melvin on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,
Guthrie shared the story of discovering—and ultimately discarding—Kotb’s leftover items following her departure from the morning show last week.
The playful tale began as Guthrie described finding trays filled with an odd assortment of belongings left behind by Kotb.
“It’s a new era. It’s the Craig era,” Guthrie quipped, referencing Melvin’s new role on the show.
She explained that the trays, which she found on set, contained everything from expired beauty products to peculiar items like a single contact lens and belly button lint.
“Guess You Didn’t Want This Stuff”
During her appearance on Fallon’s show, Guthrie, 53, laughed while recounting her reaction to the discovery. “It was, like, one contact [lens], expired bean dip, and belly button lint,” she joked, eliciting laughter from the audience.
Guthrie even recorded a video for Kotb, 60, as she threw away the items. Fallon played the clip during the segment, showing Guthrie humorously addressing her former co-anchor: “Guess you didn’t want any of this s–t.” She then dumped the contents of one tray into the trash, laughing as she added, “Look at the tray … it had rust and barnacles on it. I mean, it was disgusting!”
The playful gesture, while lighthearted, underscores the bond the two co-hosts shared over their years on Today.
A Legacy of Friendship and Professionalism
Guthrie and Kotb began anchoring Today together in 2017 following the departure of Matt Lauer amid sexual harassment allegations. Over the years, they developed not just a trusted on-screen partnership but also a close personal friendship.
Kotb’s last day as a regular co-anchor and co-host of the show’s fourth hour with Jenna Bush Hager was Friday. While Guthrie has expressed sadness over her departure, she also expressed support for Kotb’s decision to pursue new ventures.
In October 2023, Guthrie told Us Weekly, “I’m so sad to see her leave, but I’m also happy for her as her friend. She’s ready for this next chapter, and I’m excited to see what she does next.”
Kotb’s Next Chapter
Kotb may be leaving her daily Today responsibilities, but she isn’t stepping away from NBC entirely. She revealed to Page Six that she will continue contributing to the network through exclusive interviews and coverage of the upcoming Winter Olympics in 2026 and the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.
Additionally, Kotb plans to make guest appearances on Today every four to six weeks and occasionally join Jenna Bush Hager on her new show, Today With Jenna & Friends.
Kotb is also focusing on a new wellness app she’s developing. Speaking about her vision, she shared, “I decided, like, let’s build something there and let’s build something that’s good for anybody, for like, everybody. Affordable, comfortable, all those things.” She plans to offer retreats, newsletters, and app-based resources as part of this venture.
A Fond Farewell
While Guthrie and Kotb will no longer be daily co-hosts, their friendship remains strong. Guthrie’s lighthearted story of cleaning out Kotb’s belongings offers a glimpse into their camaraderie and shared sense of humor. Fans of the show can rest assured knowing that Kotb will still maintain a presence on Today, albeit in a different capacity.
As Guthrie adjusts to a new chapter on the show, she has shown she’s ready to embrace the changes while keeping the laughter alive. For viewers, the legacy of Guthrie and Kotb’s partnership will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the most cherished eras in Today history.
